What Is Meshtastic? The Beginner's Guide for Australians

Meshtastic is free, open-source software that turns a small LoRa radio module into a mesh communication device — letting you send text messages and share GPS locations with a group over long distances, with no phone coverage, no internet, and no ongoing cost.

How does it actually work?

A Meshtastic node is a small device with a LoRa radio inside. LoRa (Long Range) is a radio technology that can send small packets of data — think text messages and GPS coordinates — over distances of 3 to 12 kilometres depending on terrain. Unlike a mobile phone, it doesn't need a tower. It talks directly to other nodes.

The "mesh" part is the clever bit. When you have three or more nodes, each one automatically relays messages from the others. Node A can't reach Node C directly? It sends the message through Node B. The network finds its own path. No configuration required. It just works.

What can you do with it?

• Send and receive text messages between group members — no coverage required
• Share your GPS location so your group can see where everyone is in real time

What it doesn't do

Meshtastic is a low-bandwidth text and data system. It doesn't support voice calls, photos, or video. It is not a replacement for a mobile phone — it's the communication layer that works when your phone doesn't.

Is it legal in Australia?

Yes. In Australia, Meshtastic operates on the AU915 MHz band under the ACMA class licence for low-interference devices. No individual licence is required. All DOSnet nodes are pre-configured for AU915 and are fully compliant.

How do I use it?

Download the free Meshtastic app on iOS or Android. Power on your DOSnet node. The app connects via Bluetooth. You're on the mesh. Every DOSnet node is pre-flashed — there's nothing to install or configure.
