How to Flash Your Device With Meshtastic

Flashing a LoRa device means installing Meshtastic firmware onto it — turning a bare radio module into a fully functional mesh node. If you bought a DOSnet node, it's already done. This guide is for people who want to understand the process, or who have sourced their own hardware and want to flash it themselves.

What does "flashing" mean?

Flashing is the process of writing firmware — the operating software — onto a device's memory. Think of it like installing an operating system. Without firmware, a LoRa radio module is just hardware with no instructions. Meshtastic firmware tells it how to form a mesh, how to communicate with the app, and how to behave in the AU915 frequency environment.

What you need

  • A compatible LoRa device (T-Beam, T3S3, HELTEC v3, or similar ESP32-based LoRa board)
  • A USB-C cable that supports data transfer (not charge-only)
  • A computer with Chrome or Edge browser
  • Access to flasher.meshtastic.org

The flashing process — step by step

  1. Open the Meshtastic flasher at flasher.meshtastic.org in Chrome or Edge. Other browsers don't support the USB connection required.
  2. Connect your device via USB-C to your computer. Hold the boot button on the device while plugging in if your device requires it — this puts it in flashing mode.
  3. Select your device type from the dropdown. Choose the correct hardware variant — wrong selection means wrong firmware.
  4. Select AU915 as your region. This is the Australian frequency allocation. Do not select EU868 or US915 — they are not legal or optimal for Australian operation.
  5. Click Flash and wait. The process takes 60–120 seconds. Do not disconnect the device during flashing.
  6. Restart the device once complete. It will boot into Meshtastic and be ready to pair with the app.
